Hallo, ich bin Insa und ich
lächle nicht gerne auf Fotos!

Hi, ich bin Insa, auf Facebook auch Elaine Marley und ich schreibe, fotografiere und esse für mein Blog Squirrel of Nom.

Ich versuche bei meinem Blog immer den Fokus auf's Essen zu legen, darum gibt es nur selten Photos, auf denen ich mit drauf bin. Aber weil mich einige Leser ab und zu mal fragen, erzähle ich vielleicht doch ein paar Sachen.

Warum Squirrel of Nom?
Naja, Eichhörnchen und ich habe zwei Gemeinsamkeiten: Wir haben rote Haare und horten gerne Essen!

Machst du das beruflich?
Ich arbeite nicht in der Gastronomie oder in einem essens-bezogenen Umfeld - ein Grund mehr zu hause zu kochen! Ich arbeite im Bereich IT/Organisation und freue mich Mittags immer darauf mit gutem Essen Pause zu machen.

Womit fotografierst du?
Ich fotografiere mit einer über zehn Jahre alten EOS400D mit einem Tamron 28-75mm Objektiv, also nicht wirklich teurem Equipment, aber besser als mein Handy. Ich arbeite so gut wie möglich mit natürlichem Licht, aber wenn's mal dunkel ist - besonders im Winter - blitze ich auch mal an die Decke. Ich versuche bei Essen, das heiß gegessen wird, natürlich auch keine Zeit aufs Fotografieren zu verlieren - das Essen zu essen ist mir nämlich wichtiger :)
Alles, was ich fotografiere, esse ich auch (oder meine Gäste), also keine Essensproduktion nur um des Fotos willens :)
Und wenn man sich alte und neue Bilder ansieht, merkt man auch, dass man sich über ein paar Jahre nicht nur kulinarisch sondern auch in der Photographie weiterentwickelt.

Vegan?

Ja, inzwischen ist alles vegan bei mir. Ich bin mit konventioneller Ernährung aufgewachsen und haben früher sehr gerne Fleisch und tierische Produkte gegessen. Seit 2012 lebe ich vegetarisch und seit 2014 komplett vegan. Das fällt natürlich alles einfacher, wenn man neue Sachen in der Küche entdeckt und damit nichts vermisst.

Warum zweisprachig?
Ich habe eine Zeit lang in den USA gelebt und unter anderem Englisch studiert. Ursprünglich hatte ich nur auf meinem privaten Facebookprofil Bilder gepostet - und da ich dort mit Freunden auf der ganzen Welt in Kontakt bin (das passiert irgendwie, wenn man seine Sommer auf Metal Festivals oder in Auslandssemester verbringt), lief das auf Englisch. Darum habe ich das versucht auszubauen.

Machst du sonst noch was anderes?
Um nicht ganz so stark unter den Konsequenzen leckeren Essens zu leiden, gehe ich zum Sport. Ich höre Metal und bin gerne auf Konzerten und Festivals unterwegs. Außerdem lade ich gerne Freunde und Fremde zum Essen ein und verbringe Zeit mit Freunden und Familie.

like smiling in pictures!

Hi, my name is Insa, or Elaine Marley on Facebook, and I write, take pictures and eat for my blog Squirrel of Nom.

I try to keep my focus on food on my blog, so there are only very few pictures that actually show me. But since a couple of people have asked questions every now and then, I figured, I'd give you a little bit of an insight.

Why Squirrel of Nom?
Well, squirrels (European ones at least) and I have two things in common: We have red hair and love to stock up on food.

Is this something you do professionally?
I don't work in the food/hospitality sector - yet another reason to cook at home! I currently work in IT/organisation and look forward to the good food on lunch breaks.

What's your photography equipment?
I have a 10+ year old Canon EOS400D with a Tamron 28-75mm lense, so really not your average expensive pro equipment, but still better than my cellphone. I try to use natural light as much as possible, but when it's dark, I resort to flashing the ceiling... When food is supposed to be served hot, I try to put as little time as possible into taking the pictures - eating just happens to be more important :) Anything I take a picture of, I also eat (or my guests do) - I don't just make food for the sake of producing pictures. :)
If you look at older pictures and newer ones side by side, you'll notice that we can evolve on a culinary level, but also on a photography level.

Vegan?

like to cook and eat

Yes, all vegan for me. I grew up with a conventional diet and used to enjoy meat and animal products. In 2012 I went vegetarian, vegan in 2014. This is so much easier when you explore in the kitchen and get distracted by new experience, leaving no room for missing old traditions.

Why bilingual?
I lived in the US for a while and also ended up getting a degree in English. Originally, I had posted food pictures on my private facebook profile - and since am in touch with friends from all over the world (the things that happen when you spend your summers at metal festivals or studying abroad) - I posted everything in English. So I tried to develop the whole thing.

Do you do other things?
In order to control the consequences of yummy food, I go to the gym. I listen to metal and enjoy going to shows and festivals. And I like to invite friends and strangers for dinner, and I like to spend time with friends and family.
